The Power of I Am

"Jesus said to them, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.'" – John 8:58

It is one of the most explosive things Jesus ever said. He did not say, “I was,” though that would’ve already been staggering. He said, “I am.” Not past tense. Not future. Present. Eternal. Unchanging.

With those two words, Jesus wasn’t just making a statement about time. He was claiming the name of God. The same name spoken to Moses from the burning bush. The same name too holy for many to even speak aloud. Jesus was not offering a metaphor. He was declaring Himself to be the eternal God.

No wonder they picked up stones to throw at Him. If it wasn’t true, it would’ve been blasphemy. But it was true. And that truth changes everything.

When Jesus says “I Am,” He is saying that before your first breath and long after your last one, He remains. Constant. Present. Faithful. He is not becoming something. He is not improving or adapting. He is. Which means your trust in Him does not rest on circumstances or seasons. It rests on an eternal identity that cannot be shaken.

This is not the kind of Savior who fades with time or who bends with culture. This is the God who was, and is, and is to come. And He invites you to build your life on the rock of who He is, not who you feel you are.

So when everything else feels unstable, remember who He is. When you feel uncertain, anchor to the name that never shifts. “I Am” is not just a name. It is a promise. One that still holds you today.
