What Do You Want from Him?
“So they said to him, ‘Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” – John 6:30-31
When reading John 6, we can see that the crowd wanted more bread. They wanted more signs and another show. They followed Jesus not because they loved Him, but because He had fed them the day before. It wasn’t about surrender, it was about satisfaction. And when He didn’t meet their expectations, they started to question everything.
That’s the danger of treating God like a provider of preferences instead of the Provider of life. It’s easy to follow when He blesses, when the answers come quickly, when the doors swing open. But what happens when He doesn’t? What happens when He doesn’t perform the sign you’re waiting for?
This crowd had seen Jesus multiply five loaves and two fish. They had eaten until they were full. But that wasn’t enough. They pointed back to Moses and said, “Well, God gave our ancestors bread from heaven every day. Can you top that?” They weren’t really interested in who Jesus was. They just wanted what He could do.
God will provide, yes. He delights in giving good gifts to His children. But He’s not a vending machine. He’s not someone you keep around for convenience. His goal is not to give you what you want. His goal is to give you what you need, even when those two things don’t line up.
The real question is, if Jesus never answered another prayer, would you still follow Him? If the healing didn’t come, if the breakthrough didn’t happen, if the door stayed closed, would He still be enough? If not, you might be chasing provision more than the Provider.
Jesus offers Himself before He offers anything else. He wants a relationship, not just a list. And the ones who experience the deepest joy in Him are the ones who stop asking, “What can You do for me?” and start saying, “Whatever You want, I’m in.”
