Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark

"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." – John 1:5

It’s easy to feel like your light doesn’t matter. Maybe you’re the only Christian in your family. Maybe your coworkers don’t get why you live the way you do. Maybe you’ve kept quiet at school because the pressure to blend in is just easier than standing out. When the world feels overwhelmingly dark, your little spark of faith can feel small. But that’s exactly when it shines the brightest.

The Bible never pretends the world isn’t dark. In fact, it tells us that the people were walking in darkness until they saw a great light. That light was Jesus. He didn’t wait for the world to clean itself up. He stepped into the mess. Into the pain. Into the middle of it all. And when He called Himself the Light of the World, He wasn’t just describing what He could do. He was showing us who He is.

But it didn’t stop there. Jesus passed that identity to His followers. In Matthew 5, He said, “You are the light of the world.” Not one day. Not if you hit a certain level of spiritual maturity. Right now, if you belong to Him, then you shine. Not because you’re impressive, but because His Spirit is in you.

That means you don’t have to fear the dark. You were made for it. Your words, your attitude, your compassion, your convictions, even your quiet faithfulness, they all shine. And the darker the setting, the easier it is to see the light.

John 1:5 is not just poetic. It’s a promise. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. It didn’t then, and it won’t now. So don’t hide your light. Let it shine.
