Stop Settling for Sleepwalking

“Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” – Ephesians 5:14

There’s a scene in the old play Our Town by Thornton Wilder that hits a little too close to home. A character who has died is given a chance to relive one day of her life. She picks an ordinary day, her twelfth birthday, thinking it will be sweet. But as she watches it unfold, something happens. She notices how nobody really sees anything. People are rushing. Distracted. Focused on chores and tasks but blind to beauty and love and the fleeting nature of time. It breaks her. She realizes how much of life we sleepwalk through.

The same thing happens spiritually. Most people don't realize they're asleep. We do the routines, go to church, say the right things. But our hearts are dull. We miss the wonder of grace, the presence of Jesus, and the urgency of what’s at stake. Just like in Our Town, we assume we have more time. We assume we’ll wake up eventually. But what if today is your wake-up call?

Jesus doesn’t just want to forgive your sins. He wants to open your eyes. He wants to awaken your soul. Spiritual sleep isn’t always about doing something wrong. Sometimes it’s just living numb, distracted, and disconnected from the voice of God and the life He offers.

That’s why Scripture often uses the word “awake.” Because it’s possible to be physically alive but spiritually asleep. Jesus calls you to more than drifting. He calls you to life. Real life. Awake life. A life where your eyes are open, your heart is soft, and you don’t miss what matters most.

It's time to stop settling for just going through the motions. Don’t wait until it’s too late to realize how much you’re missing. Ask God to wake you up now. Because the moment you open your eyes, everything changes.
