The Prodigal Resurrection

"But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him." – Luke 15:20

Sometimes resurrection doesn’t look like a miracle from heaven. Sometimes it looks like a quiet decision to turn around. In the story of the prodigal son, we often focus on the father running to meet him, but something else happened first. The son “arose.” He got up from the pigpen. He took a step back toward the home he had abandoned. And that step changed everything.

Jesus tells this story to show us the heart of the Father. He isn’t standing off in the distance with arms crossed. He’s watching the road. He’s longing for your return. He doesn’t need you to clean yourself up or make sense of the mess. He just wants you to come back. And the moment you do, He runs.

Repentance is not just about admitting wrong. It’s about coming alive again. The son didn’t just go home; he was restored. The robe, the ring, the feast...none of that happened until he got up and turned toward the Father. He thought he’d be lucky to be treated like a servant. He was welcomed as a son.

Maybe you’ve convinced yourself that you’ve gone too far or stayed away too long. Maybe you’ve believed the lie that shame means you’re disqualified. But the only thing standing between you and resurrection is a step. You don’t have to fix everything first. You just have to turn.

The moment you move toward God, He moves toward you. He meets you on the road. He pulls you into His arms. That’s resurrection. That’s the gospel. You don’t earn your way back. You just come back. And when you do, new life begins. Not someday. Not after you’ve cleaned up. Right now.
